Developing a digital-based curriculum of water footprint awareness in Mediterranean fisheries for sustainable resources in Europe
Project no.: 2024-1-TR01-KA220-HED-000247730
Cooperation partnership in higher education – KA220-HED
“The interest in the water footprint is rooted in the recognition that human impacts on freshwater systems can ultimately be linked to human consumption, and that issues like water shortages and pollution can be better understood and addressed by considering production and supply chains as a whole,”
Professor Arjen Y. Hoekstra

Our team
For the survival of living things, water is one of the most essential elements.
All biological life is dependent on water, from the tiniest organism to the largest. Fish and seafood, including fish that are farmed and fish that are caught in the wild, are produced using a total amount of freshwater, which is known as a fishery’s “water footprint.”. A significant contribution to agricultural production, aquaculture and fishing activities produces about 180 million tons of water annually.

Wantofish will implement
This project proposal aims to raise awareness about the significance of water one of the two essential elements of life for human existence as well as to provide information on sector-specific water resource protection strategies, such as calculating the water footprint left by fishing operations.

Digital-based innovative curriculum
Interactive lessons designed to raise awareness about water use in Mediterranean fisheries.

E-learning platform and piloting with online education kits
An online education hub piloted with real-world scenarios and resources.

The Water Footprint of Mediterranean Fisheries and Aquaculture ebook
The Water Footprint of Mediterranean Fisheries and Aquaculture, a comprehensive resource for sustainable water practices.
Through the expertise of our project team, our training we provide aims to increase awareness of the water footprint in aquaculture activities.
This awareness will enable individuals working in private and public aquaculture production, as well as managers and policymakers, to contribute to the development of water-saving technologies and strategies.
The project is co-financed by
the Erasmus + Programme of the European Union and it is implemented, between 2 years (01.12.2024 – 30.11.2026), being a Cooperation partnership in higher education (KA220-HED).
It is a transnational consortium led
